Types of translations
Certified Translation
In the UK, a certified translation is a translation made by a competent person of good standing in the community and must be accompanied by a cover letter that states the accuracy of the translation with the translator credentials and contact information.
This is the type of translation that is required for most academic and civil events such as marriage, immigration, visa or university application. This type of translation is also the most frequently asked by the UK government.
Notarised translation
This is a certified translation that is further signed and stamped by a solicitor in front of the translator. It is of higher legal standing than a regular certified translation.
If you are asked for a notarized translation, a certified translation will not be enough.
It is however only required for specific usage.
Apostille
If an apostille is required, that means that you need a notarized translation validated by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
These are usually only needed to present documents overseas and will not be asked for documents that need to be used within the UK.
